FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about the shape, scope, and handling of a Blobb engagement.

Do you work remotely?

Yes. Blobb is remote first, based in British Columbia, Canada, and works with clients across the United States, Canada, and Europe. On-site periods are proposed where they materially improve the result, most often one embedded week during an audit. Travel is priced separately.

What is the minimum engagement?

Hourly engagements start with $5,000 of agreed volume. This can cover a focused review of a specific architecture, plan, cost model, code path, or other question; a full architecture audit is not required.

Do you charge fixed price or hourly?

Both. Most work, including audits, is billed hourly against an agreed volume because that lets priorities and depth change as evidence emerges. If a client prefers budget certainty and less ongoing administration, Blobb can agree a fixed commitment priced from the estimated time required, with its scope and assumptions written down in advance.

Do we have to start with a full audit?

No. Blobb often recommends an independent assessment before a larger project because the root cause may be far from the symptoms. Prioritizing properly and selecting the actions with the highest return on investment make the best use of your money. That can be a full audit or a focused review of one question. The infrastructure and mobile platform case studies show the value of establishing that baseline, but the right starting point depends on what you need to decide.

Can you help with hiring?

Yes, as part of an engagement rather than as a standalone service. That covers defining the roles a team actually needs, writing the technical evaluation, sitting on interview panels, and structuring how an engineering organization is arranged. Blobb is not a recruitment agency and takes no placement fee.

Do you work with startups?

Yes. Our founders have held CTO roles in startups, and Blobb has been engaged by several. The work fits best after a product is in the market and the first architecture has started to hurt.

What size of company do you work with?

Mid-size businesses and growing startups are the core of the practice, typically with an engineering team already in place and a system that is central to revenue. Blobb also takes selected engagements with larger organizations and with the public sector.

What happens to our data during an audit?

Read access only, to the systems in scope. A mutual NDA can be signed before anything is shared. Blobb's standard mutual NDA and a completed security questionnaire are available for download.

Do you implement, or only advise?

Both. An audit or focused review can end with a scoped optimization, a re-architecture program or larger engineering organization led by Blobb, or a plan handed to your team. Blobb can identify skill gaps and help with hiring. There is no obligation to continue after the assessment.

Should I rewrite my entire application?

It depends. Re-architecting a complex running system usually happens in phases: some parts may be rewritten from scratch, some improved iteratively in the existing codebase, and some replaced with open source. We believe in pragmatism and select the most appropriate approach for your circumstances.

In which languages do you work?

English and French, in writing and in meetings.
